Are you taking Statin drugs to lower your cholesterol? If so, and just in case this could be in your future, then you may need to continue reading this article. It has been said that if we are taking these drugs, then a number of less than nice possibilities could also be in our future.
The alarm, though not a new one is that cholesterol-lowering drugs could be linked to type 2 diabetes. Please note that the progression would be high blood sugar levels, insulin resistance and possibly type 2 diabetes.
The Study Linking Statin Drugs and Diabetes
A total of 9,535 people were involved in this study and they were all above 45 years old. Note that these people were diabetic-free and they were followed for 15 years.
The fasting glucose of those who used statin drugs was higher and there were some talks about insulin resistance. They had a 38 percent higher risk of being diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. This was more so for those who were obese.
Please note that this is not a new discovery. This diabetes risk was seen as far back as 2012.
A suggestion was made that some preventative measures be taken. They included the following strategies to prevent; a) high blood sugar and b) weight gain. Hence, it would be a wise thing to control one’s blood sugar and to lose weight (for those who are overweight) when taking statins to safeguard against diabetes in the future.
Statin Drugs and the Human Heart
Another article looked at a different angle. Mention was made of the fact that these statin drugs also helps to protect our heart. The claim by the Consumer Reports is that the benefit to our heart outweighs the diabetes risk and so we are encouraged to continue taking the cholesterol-lowering medication.
This is to be discussed with our doctors and dependent on other risk factors, then it should be left to us to decide whether or not we continue to take these statin drugs.
Can Lifestyle Changes Help?
I am sure that you have heard the recommendation before that if our risk of a heart attack or stroke is less than 10 percent, then a lifestyle change of diet and exercise should be undertaken to lower cholesterol.
A healthy diet to lower cholesterol encourages a war against saturated fats, trans fats, and foods high in cholesterol. We are also encouraged to exercise and to lose weight. People who smoke are also encouraged to quit smoking.
In some cases, the above changes are enough for some people to stay off statin drugs and in other situations, the dosage is lowered and also possibly the risk of the side effects.

I am sure that I am not the only person who gets wary about taking medication for one medical issue, which could then lead to other health issues. However, I noticed something encouraging and I would rather make this our focus.
Yes, I was encouraged by the lifestyle change to ensure that high cholesterol is kept at bay. I am still in the process of that change and what a difference I see on a weekly basis. It all boils down to the same lifestyle.
Yes, an active lifestyle can never be overstated. It is the same lifestyle which is excellent for those of us diagnosed with high blood sugar, high blood pressure, and obesity. Did I mention that I now have more energy than I have had in a long time?
I made a change to this lifestyle and my blood pressure is mostly controlled, and I am losing weight. My blood sugar readings are encouraging most days, and what I absolutely love is that it is a lifestyle that is becoming more comfortable for me to maintain for a lifetime.

When all is said and done, I recognize that I must take responsibility for and care this precious gift that God gave to me. Food and exercise make a big difference.

The debate will continue for a long time. The truth is that all drugs have side effects, and this includes the so-called natural drugs too. Moderation is always the key, along with a diet rich in whole foods.
It is for us to decide, with the help of our medical doctor, if the statin drugs will help more than it will harm. Either way, we look at it, a lifestyle change of eating whole foods and becoming more active is and will always be the better and safer option.
