Zobo is a non-alcoholic drink from Nigeria. It is made from the Hibiscus Sabdariffa flower. This flower comes from the Rosselle plant.
The drink/tea is drunk both sweetened and unsweetened. Please be reminded that a diabetic may prefer to consume this tea without sugar.
As part of the series “teas for diabetes,” today we will take a look at zobo tea and the effect it has on diabetes and other illnesses. Diabetes and its complications are the focus of this article.
What’s my Name and How do I Look?
Hibiscus Sabdariffa has different names, dependent on where you are located in the world. In the Caribbean, we call it SORREL. The Sudanese call it Karkade and the Mexicans say Aguas Fercas.
Let us now take a look at some features we can use to identify this plant and its flowers. It has a ruby red color (See above picture) and a sour, but refreshing taste, especially when combined with ginger or pineapple.
Garlic is sometimes added for extra nutrients, but other fruits can also be used. In Jamaica, we mix sorrel and ginger mostly around the Christmas season.
