Surprise, Surprise, Basil

Basil and Diabetes

Basil is used for controlling blood sugar when it is taken on a regular basis.  It is used to make a tea.  This is done via an antioxidant which relieves oxidative stress.  This (oxidative stress) occurs when the body is not able to detoxify or neutralize the dangerous effects of free radicals.

Basil helps in the secretion of insulin.  This is of extreme importance for persons suffering from diabetes.  Just imagine that a cup of basil tea will have this effect.  Go ahead, place the water in the kettle and have a different tea today, BASIL.

Fasting Blood Glucose Level

The news gets better.  I am sure you dread those morning readings.  I did at one point.  The good news is that basil will also lower your fasting blood glucose readings.  Yes, you heard me.  When you consume basil regularly, you will gladly wake to lower blood glucose in the mornings.  That’s a nice bonus.  You are certainly welcome.

Blood Glucose Level after Meal

I have been there and back several times in my life.  Dreading to eat and pondering what to eat.  The question was always, how much should I eat?  Yes, you understand exactly what I am speaking about.  Those spikes we get when we eat.  Yes, our blood glucose spikes after we eat.  This is so for everybody, but more critical for those of us with diabetes.

The good news…..Basil will prevent these horrifying spikes.  “Polly put the kettle on…”  Go ahead.  Have a cup of basil tea with one or two of your meals for the day.  The only thing you have to lose is the high glucose reading.  I am pretty sure you want to throw those highs out anyway.  Go ahead, drink up.

Cardiovascular Complications

Diabetic patients understand quite well the link between diabetes and cardiovascular issues, many times leading to death.  This is a secondary complication for persons with diabetes.  You know where I am heading with this line of argument.

Cardiovascular complications could be a thing of the past for persons with diabetes.  Basil has been found to be effective in this regard.  Free radicals result in cardiovascular damage in diabetic patients, but the good news is here at last.

Basil contains antioxidants which are known to fight off free radicals.  You got it perfectly well.  What are you waiting for “Polly?”  “Put the kettle on.”   Kettle

Pancreas, not alone

Insulin secretion is encouraged because of some essential oils found in the leaves of the basil.  The truth be told.  A little basil tea and some basil sprinkled on our meat is a good idea and will benefit us in our new lifestyle to combat diabetes and to obtain optimum health.

Allow me to remind you that pancreas health and function is of extreme importance for diabetics and may determine whether one lives or die.  Yes, basil for the pancreas is good news.

“Polly, please put the kettle on.”

Bonus Time

Using basil on a regular basis will also help you with the following:

  • Nervous Disorders
  • Constipation
  • Intestinal Catarrh
  • Insect Bites/Stings
  • Menstruation Issues
  • Vomiting
  • Colds

Nervous Disorders

Basil has helped persons with anxiety, depression, insomnia, memory retention issues and Alzheimer’s Disease.  Migraine headache sufferer’s and those with just ordinary headache also reported good results with basil.  I can verify using basil for a headache.  One cup of that basil tea got rid of my headache within 20 minutes.

It is easy to make the tea.  I just added 1 teaspoon of the leaves to a cup of hot water.  I covered for about 2-3 minutes, then I drank my “medication.”  Yes, it is worth a try.  Go ahead.

Historically, the basil leaves are used to ease constipation, stomach cramps, and gas.  Three cups per day have been touted as adequate and safe.

Caution Banner

I like to stop for a bit and pace my caution tape across the screen.  The intention is not to scare you my reader, but out of concern, I must remind you that moderation is the key, especially for those of us with diabetes.

Intestinal Catarrh

This occurs in the lining of the intestines and can be uncomfortable.  It is an inflammation which results in diarrhea and sometimes rumbling in the tummy.  I am sure you will agree with me that to be able to fix this situation with a cup of tea is nothing short of amazing!

I know you may be wondering how this tea helps with constipation as well as diarrhea.  It is similar to taking medication, it simply treats the underlying problem/s.  I take lime water and lemon water some mornings.  Whatever the issue is with my blood pressure, whether high or low, the lemon/lime water normalizes the blood pressure.

Insect Bites/Stings and Snakes too?

Many persons have used this on wasp stings.  Crush some of the leaves and rub these crushed leaves in the area.  This prevents the itching and possible swelling.  It is also good to use when bitten or stung by other insects/bugs.  Persons even had success using it on snake bites.  I will not say much on this point.  The first and only snake I ever saw, left me feeling if my heart was beating.  I don’t know that I would be standing afterward to rub crushed basil leaves in the area.

I believe that we should all plant some of this wonderful herb, for both the aroma and its’ medicinal values.  What do you have to lose?

Menstruation Issues, Believe it or Not

Believe it or not, fresh basil has been effective in relieving menstrual cramps.  No need to suffer.  Drink some basil tea.  I heard of persons chewing about 8 leaves and the pain went away almost immediately.

Basil has been used to stop vomiting.  Guess what?  Persons have used it on their cruise to relieve nausea and motion sickness.  In these cases, they simply chewed the leaves.  Are you now thinking of going to the store to purchase some basil seeds?

Colds, The Basil Cure

It eases coughing and inflammation and In some cases removed the need for antibiotics.

Remember, I am not prescribing.  I felt a need some years ago to try using foods to heal my own body.  I attended an online class and have been buying books and researching various topics since.  The results are encouraging and I am using this medium to share and encourage you as you make that journey to a healthier and happier you, free of lifestyle ailments.

Rest is usually a good cure for many illnesses.  Allow me to encourage you to take a break from the stresses of everyday living.  Check this out ClubHotel Riu Mambo

Hi, Josephine. This article hit home, my friend. My entire immediate family is at risk for diabetes (mom had it for decades before she passed 🙁 ). Far as I know I have 1 sister and a niece who are diabetic, but that doesn’t let the rest of us off the hook! I’ve had an addiction to pop for many years now, and though it does not contain Caffein, it is full of unhealthy sugar!! I’m definitely sharing to my Facebook! Nice post!

Audra, I am sorry to hear about the passing of your mom. I lost my mom too and the emptiness can never be filled. Thanks for the promise to share on Facebook and please make up your mind to break the pop addiction. I know you can. Replace pop with something similar in taste, texture, but healthier. When you say “pop,” are you talking about a special sweet drink or a popsicle? Sorry, I am from a different culture, and I am not sure what a pop is.

I did a little research, though. If it is the popsicle, have you tried blending fruits with banana and freezing, then eat a little when you have the urge for a pop? If it is the drink, try blending fruits and use a sweet fruit to replace the sugar and have that instead. Start getting used to tea without sugar or just plain water. Trust me, my friend, you do not want to invite diabetes in your home. It is horrible. Audra, make the change NOW. I am more than happy to help.
