Reversing Type 2 Diabetes with Weight Loss?

Results – Type 2 Diabetes and Weight Loss

In this study, two years after the weight management program, more than a third of the participants were in remission. After a year of being in remission, 70% of the participants remained in remission. Yes, this meant that they were no longer diabetic.

There was a link between type 2 diabetes remission and weight loss in the results of the study. Those who lost 10 kilos or more, after 2 years went into remission. Yes, it is not an over-the-night affair. It takes time and commitment on our part, but well worth the effort in my opinion.

Exercise and weight loss always yield additional bonuses. The quality of life for the participants improved. They also needed less medication for type 2 diabetes. It’s time for more information on the study itself. Please continue to read below.

More on the Study

The study was done by the Diabetes Remission Clinical Trial (DiRECT). Experts from New Castle University and the University of Glasgow were the ones who led the research.

The study revealed that after the first year of weight loss, as much as 46% of the participants went into remission and as much as 70% of that figure remained in remission. Those who lost up to 15.5 kilos were the ones who remained in remission.

Remission was defined as those participants with less than 48mmol/mol without the help of medication over the long term. Let us dig a little deeper concerning the weight loss and typem2 diabetes reversal connection.

Pancreas, Weight Loss and Type 2 Diabetes

When we lose weight, it results in less fat in our pancreas. This allows the pancreas to recover as it relates to its function and insulin production. This leads us to re-think the view that diabetes will progress until complications lead to death.

Here is the bitter reality. We can reverse diabetes by losing weight, but the numbers will climb again once we start to regain weight. We must keep off the weight.

Is Exercising the Magic Pill?

Something caught my attention in the Media Release. Two testimonials were given at the end and I noticed exercising as a lifestyle change was mentioned by both participants.

It would, therefore, suggest that yes we can reverse diabetes by a lifestyle change of losing weight via diet and exercise. Diabetes will return if we step away from that lifestyle change. We must seek to maintain that weight at which our diabetes went into remission.

I am careful in saying reversing and so I prefer to say remission. Yes, that lifestyle of maintaining a certain weight, coupled with diet and exercise is clearly what is needed to keep diabetes away forever. Here is the link to the media release.

I have seen a couple of people reverse their type 2 diabetes with weight loss. One of them is my aunt. After she read a book by Dr. Jason Fung she decided to try out the Keto Diet with Intermittent Fasting and I have to say that the result was amazing. Of course, she brought it up with her doctor, and together they worked it out. She still has a long way to go but she no longer needs to inject insulin but take some metformin here and there. We think that in the future she can probably go off it completely.

This again is another proof that type 2 diabetes is a lifestyle disease. I truly think that losing weight cannot only help with type 2 diabetes but also help us prevent any other disease. Let’s think about it, our body is like a machine. When we have a larger body our organs just have to work harder and they will act up eventually.

Leading a healthy lifestyle, eating whole foods, exercise, and get a quality sleep will help us ward off all of these awful diseases.

Congrats to your aunt and I pray for continued success on her journey.  Yes, it is a lifestyle disease and so it will show its’ ugly head when we revert to our previous lifestyle.  Here is an article about the Keto Diet.  You may also like this one about Intermittent Fasting.

I am quite familiar with the fact that by making healthy lifestyle changes type 2 diabetes can often be put into remission as you stated in your article.

An exercise program like the Leslie Sansone’s walking video you mentioned is a great idea place to help.

I would like to add that doing a few simple exercises with light, free weights will help tone muscles and help accelerate the weight loss process. There are plenty of videos online to learn how to do some simple toning exercises.

Thanks for sharing this information, I am sure you will help a lot of people.
