This plant has purple flowers and white veins. This gift from nature has antioxidants which result in an improvement in insulin resistance in those diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. It is difficult for diabetics to process blood glucose and so this plant is a blessing.
Some of the symptoms of diabetes are; feeling like you need to (pee) too often, thirsty most times, being tired, possible blurred vision and sometimes feeling hungry like one has gone without food for an extended period of time.
As Simple as Diet and Exercise
When one is diagnosed, then medication is usually prescribed. Note, however, that at the pre-diabetes stage, most doctors would suggest a change in diet and exercise to prevent the onset of diabetes. In a number of cases, diet and exercise are enough to control diabetes. I am privileged to be able to do the research and to have the will power to experiment and to see the results.
I now understand my body in that I have a pretty decent idea of the effect particular foods will have on my blood glucose. I did a video and an article recently about the effects of certain spices on our blood glucose. Today we will spend a little time looking at a herb called milk thistle and the effect that has on our blood glucose.
My Journey with Milk Thistle
I am yet to have the milk thistle in the raw, but, I experimented with the over the counter medication (tablets) and had wonderful results. Let me hasten to add that I am evolving as it relates to my lifestyle. I am now aware of the impact of food on my body.
I eat more whole foods and I make a valiant effort to reduce the number of carbs I consume. My diet is rich in fruits, vegetables, beans, legumes, nuts, seeds, and some animal protein. I injected this bit to say that my blood sugar is mostly controlled and so most herbs and spices are effective for me because even the slightest of change gives me great health leverage. I also needed to point out that my lifestyle is one intended to control, or possibly eliminate diabetes.
Time for Some Magic
Silymarin creates magic. This is a dry mixture of the compounds found in the milk thistle plant and it is this dry mixture that encourages the pancreas to produce more insulin. This insulin then plays the balancing act in our blood to reduce the glucose level.
Milk thistle has been found to be effective on our fasting blood sugar levels. This is the reading I find to be more stubborn than the others. Sometimes I struggle to get a number which makes me happy in the mornings. However, as I continue to use my herbs and spices, which includes milk thistle, reduce my carb intake, eat a diet rich in whole foods and strive to be more physically active, I see positive changes. My readings are mostly good and so I am a testimony that a lifestyle change can help us to be healthier over time and can control and possibly eliminate diabetes from our lives.
Some Possible Side Effects of Milk Thistle
Note that in one article, I saw where we were being advised to take milk thistle for up to 41 months and no more. Let me add my two cents to the views. I agree with moderation, and so sometimes I take a supplement, herb, spice or tea for say a three months period and then I give it a break for a next three months.
Whenever I awake to a normal reading I do everything I can to keep the figure that way by eating low carb whole foods. It is always motivating to get out of bed with numbers close to, or normal.
Upset stomach, diarrhea, gas and bloating are some possibilities when using milk thistle. Rash and allergic reaction are also possible. It has also been said that people suffering from some cancers should avoid taking milk thistle. Remember that I take the tablets and I have not had any of these side effects.
Other Health Benefits of Milk Thistle
- Prevents acne
- Protects the liver
- Great for our bones
- Offers protection to our brain
- Reduces blood cholesterol (diabetics sometimes have to take medication for this as well)
- Treats liver issues such as; jaundice, hepatitis, cirrhosis and gall bladder issues
- It is also said that milk thistle is effective when used with cancer patients as it reduces the side-effects of the treatment
Milk thistle has many health benefits, but the focus of this article was its effect on the pancreas and ultimately blood glucose. This herb forces the pancreas to produce more insulin and so the blood glucose level in our body is reduced. Milk thistle is known to have an impact on our fasting levels and so the tablets and teas could be of benefit to those diagnosed with diabetes.
Other health benefits cited included, but are not limited to jaundice help, cirrhosis assistance, protection for liver and bones and the reduction in our cholesterol levels.
As we continue to effectively control and possibly eliminate diabetes from our lives using diet and exercise, allow me to encourage my readers to keep reading and researching. Information gives us the knowledge base to act, thereby making it one of the most powerful tools available to us.
