Lychee is a fruit from the tropics with a unique appearance and flavorful taste. Even though this fruit can be grown in areas such as Florida, Hawaii, and the Caribbean, it is native to China. Another name for the lychee fruit is “alligator strawberry.” This alias explains the red, bumpy skin. In this article, we will answer the question, Is lychee fruit good for diabetics?

Lychee Fruit Features

These fruits are round or oblong in shape with a diameter of 1 ½ to 2 inches. Their flesh is opaque and the fruit is fragrant and sweet. It was previously stated that the fruit has red, bumpy skin. The fruit can be best described as fleshy.

The fruit is made up of three layers:

  1. The husk which has a reddish color
  2. A white flesh
  3. The seed that has a brown color

Even though the exterior has a leathery look and is tough, nonetheless, it’s easy to remove the out layer by using your fingers. When this is done, this is where we will see the white interior that has a glossy sheen. The lychee fruit has a firm texture, that reminds us of grapes.

Other people say that the lychee fruit tastes like a blend of rose water and citrus. The verdict is that this fruit has a strong, yet pleasing aroma and is considered delicious by many.

Health Benefits of Lychee and Diabetes

The flesh of the lychee is a rich source of proanthocyanidins. Note that proanthocyanidins boast the following health benefits:

  • Anti-diabetic. This is welcoming news for diabetics.
  • Antioxidant. This plays a major role in keeping us healthy.
  • Anti-carcinogenic, which means it inhibits or preventing cancer.
  • Anti-inflammatory. Note that inflammation is the root cause of many illnesses.
  • Prevents tumors from growing blood vessels, hence it is anti-angiogenic.
  • Protects our hearts.
  • Liver protection.

The above gives diabetics good reasons to enjoy the lychee fruit.

Popular Uses of the Lychee Fruit

The lychee fruit can be eaten on its own, or it can be used in tropical fruit salads. It is common to see the fruit as part of a fruit salad. The lychee fruit is also blended into cocktails, desserts, juices, and smoothies.

How do I Access the Lychee Fruit?

Lychee fruit is prepared by removing the husk and the seed. You can eat straight by placing the flesh in your mouth and then remove the seed by spitting it out.

You can also use your thumb to pierce open the bumpy outer layer called the “alligator skin.” As soon as you can see the fruit, just peel off the skin. When a lychee fruit is ripe, the skin will easily pierce and with little effort slide off. 

If you are using lychee in a recipe, peel the fruit, then cut it in half to show the seed. Following that separate the two pieces of the fruit. Consequently, the seed will stick to one side, similar to an avocado. Use your finger and thumb to remove the seed. When it is ripe, the lychee seed will be easily removed.

Lychee Recipes for Diabetics

In this section, I will share three lychee recipes for diabetics. Firstly, let us look at a lychee smoothie.

Diabetic-Friendly Lychee Smoothie

What you will Need:

  • 1  ripe banana (peeled and sliced)
  • 10 lychees
  • 1/3 cup crunchy peanut butter
  • 1 cup milk of choice
  • 1/4 cup orange juice
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon
  • Ice cubes


  1. Place the banana and lychee on a baking sheet and freeze for at least 20 minutes.
  2. Blend the frozen banana in a blender until smooth.
  3. Add the peanut butter, cinnamon, milk, and orange juice. Blend again until the mixture is smooth.
  4. Vanilla, and ice cubes (if using), should now be added, and blend for a short time, just seconds.
  5. Serve and Enjoy!

Lychee Fruit Medley for Diabetics

Diabetics can enjoy lychee and other fruits. Here is a delicious lychee fruit salad.

What you will need:

  • 12 lychee
  • 1/2 cup strawberries, sliced
  • 1/4 cup raspberries
  • 1/3 kiwi fruit, cubed
  • 1 ripe banana, sliced


Combine in a bowl and enjoy.

The Lychee Fruit has many health benefits, thus making it a great choice for diabetics. There are a number of reasons to eat this fruit. A few of them are; anti-diabetic, antioxidant, anti-carcinogenic, anti-inflammatory, prevents tumors from growing blood vessels, hence it is anti-angiogenic, protects our hearts and liver.

    Hey Josephine, I love your site and often return here for all diabetic-related questions. You always have the best information. I have tried a few of your previous recommendations and have really liked them.

    Lychee is a really yummy fruit and I really like the diabetic medley recipe-can’t wait to try it.

    My dad is diabetic and he also just recently started to have kidney problems. This is such a dangerous combination in terms of what he can and can NOT eat. Do you think lychee is safe for patients like my dad?

    Lychees are delicious. I love getting them from the local market where I live in SE-Asia and snacking on them. To me they are sweet and the best way to eat them is with bananas and ice cream (maybe the ice cream is not so good for a diabetic person?).

    The fact that they are good for so many reasons as you have described above is such a blessing. It seems to me that if we stayed away from processed foods and ate more natural raw foods there would be a lot less diabetes in the world.

    I love lychees! They are delicious. Unfortunately, they aren’t always available where I live but when they are I buy them. I didn’t know that they have so many health benefits, that’s a reason to get them more often! I like the lychee fruit medley recipe, it’s perfect for the summer.

    I think your site is an entire wealth of knowledge on the dangerous diabetes. It is great how you inform and provide solutions to this menace of a disease. 

    This recipe is awesome and I have tasted Lychee, however it is not a fruit available in my country. We mostly get it in fruit juices. I think this is a good fruit and the benefits are awesome.

    Lychees are so tasty and knowing that these fruits are even beneficial for people suffering from diabetes is Great.

    Diabetes is so common nowadays and I think rather than depending totally on the medications you should be incorporating these kinds of fruits and vegetables that are good for diabetes.

    Because Diet also plays an important role in one’s health. The recipe that you have provided seems to be very tasty.

    I am definitely trying it and also giving it to my grandfather who is suffering from diabetes. I hope this works for him.

      It would be best to stay away from the juices as those tend to have added sugars and will result in a rise in blood sugar.
