The connection between the names, cinnamon and Type 2 diabetes is not strange in the health arena.  For some time now, we have been hearing that cinnamon is effective in lowering blood glucose readings.  I am sure you need some more information on cinnamon.  Here we go.

What is Cinnamon? Respect Seniority

Do you remember I told you that it has been around for a long time?  Cinnamon is one of the oldest herbs in the world.  It was commonly used in Egypt and has been mentioned in the bible a few times.  See?  I told you there was nothing new about cinnamon!

Then, it was used to flavor drinks, for medicine and embalming the Pharaohs.   Stay with me, I know you probably don’t like the last point.  You see, it was used because of the sweet aroma, fitting for kings, queens, and Pharaohs.  Stay with me.

Cinnamon was traded and was seen as more important than gold.  Yes, you heard me correctly….GOLD.

Cinnamon is used for a number of health-related issues and has been found guilty of being effective. Continue to read the following sections. Wait! Read only if you are interested in the fight against diabetes.

Controls Blood Sugar

Cinnamon is effective for insulin resistance.  This is where the insulin is produced by the body but is not used effectively.  This then results in too much glucose in the blood because enough is not being used by the cells.

When you go to buy cinnamon, look for the one that has “Ceylon” written on the container.  There is another type called “Cassia,” but, this one has more “coumarin,” a substance when taken in large doses, can damage your liver.

Let me, however, add, that the Cassia Cinnamon has been found more effective for diabetics.  It, however, makes no sense to be diabetic free with a failing liver, which will eventually lead to your untimely death.  Brick by brick, we will rid ourselves of diabetes.

Remember, the aim is to control or eliminate diabetes and have a new, healthy lifestyle.  You can’t be healthy with a damaged liver, so I caution you to exercise wisdom and patience.  You will get the desired results.

Studies done revealed that if we take 1/2 teaspoon daily, our blood glucose will be reduced.

Cinnamon has been found guilty of helping persons with digestion issues.  When you consume that 1/2 teaspoon per day, it improves digestion, reduces intestinal discomfort, reduces stomach cramps, reduces irritable bowel syndrome and diarrhea is also reduced.  The oil from the bark breaks down the fat during digestion.


Cinnamon is also good for vomiting, colic, and griping.  I have been using cinnamon for some time now.  Again in moderation.  I sometimes mix a tea with 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon and water.  I rarely add some evaporated milk, but never sugar.  Remember, we are avoiding sugar and other processed foods in order to be diabetic free, healthy and happy.

Menstrual Cramping

A long time ago, when cinnamon was more precious than gold and was considered the “King of the Spices,” it was used to relieve menstrual cramps and other similar discomforts.  At that time, cinnamon was used for so many issues, the thought of not having this precious spice in the pantry was unheard of and plain irresponsible.

  • Circulation, due to its blood thinning properties which are a little less than garlic

    Thank you for this post it was very helpful. I do not have diabetes, but I do have high cholesterol. I will keep this in mind and try to add more cinnamon with Ceylon to my diet. I may also have my daughter try it for cramps. I do not have that problem, but would like to see if this helps her. I always prefer natural ways to eliminate pain and anything else medical over taking medication.

      Thanks for taking the time to read and comment Brandy. Bitter melon is also good for cramps. Just remember moderation in everything that you do. A whole food diet will take care of your cholesterol issue and do more baking and steaming of your meats. Eat mostly vegetables and decrease your meat in-take.       Hi Noemi, I think moderation is the best so I have cinnamon with my porridge 2 to three times per week and sometimes with my coffee. I also vary the amount and sometimes I do not take the cinnamon. Moderation is the key for me. All the best.
