Berry Wine-Controlling Diabetes During Christmas

Some foods are seen as better than others for diabetics and we label them as “superfoods.” Included in this group are the berries and so today we will focus our attention on wines made from these berries, especially those which are recommended for diabetics.

We do not need to complicate the matter or to pretend. Christmas is around the corner, and it is a time when we focus on the birth of Christ, but it is also a very commercial holiday when we spend for gifts etc., but, my favorite part is spending time with family and friends. Yes, and we cook, eat, laugh, talk and play. This brings to the forefront the practicality of controlling diabetes with diet during Christmas.

I saw an article about berry wine being used to curb diabetes and thought this would be good for my readers to know, especially those of us who are diabetic. The researchers hail from the University of Illinois. They discovered that fermented berries were antidiabetic and so delivers good news during the Christmas season for those of us who are diabetic and would love to drink some wine.

The wine in the research was a non-alcoholic blueberry-blackberry wine. Please remember that as diabetics we must avoid alcohol at all cost. Yes, this also applies for the Christmas season.

The secret  of the berry wine is anthocyanin. Blood glucose is lowered because of the presence of anthocyanin. The research was done on rats on a high-fat diet. Interestingly, it also reduced obesity. We met this word (anthocyanin) when we looked at some healthy recipes for diabetics and mention was made of sweet potatoes. This is what anthocyanin will do for diabetics:

  • Decrease our blood sugar
  • Insulin secretion will be enhanced
  • Insulin sensitivity will be promoted
  • It inhibits enzymes which are related to the absorption of glucose
  • Protects us against cardiovascular diseases
  • Gives us protection against cancer

If you would like to have more anthocyanin in your diet, then eat the following fruits:

  • grapes
  • blueberries
  • apples

Yes, I have been saying and will continue to say eat whole foods to reverse diabetes and to be generally healthier than you have probably been in years. Yes, wine is processed and would hardly be considered a whole food, but, I am also a practical person. Please be reminded that I am proposing a lifestyle change to reverse, or at least control diabetes. For me, this means I must eat and live in  a way that I can comfortably do for the rest of my life.

What does this have to do with drinking wine? It has everything. I still love to celebrate and when I made a decision to change my lifestyle in order to be healthier, I kept my wine glasses. Yes, I did, and so I am happy to see that there is something I can consider drinking from these glasses during the Christmas season. Yes, I just needed to give you a glimpse of what I will be doing for Christmas as it relates to my wine glasses and their use. You are perfectly correct, I will be pouring some of the non-alcoholic, preferably berry wines.

As you celebrate Christmas, remember your goal to be diabetic-free in 2017. There are a number of things we can do to ensure that we have controlled blood glucose levels during the season. One such thing is to make the switch to non-alcoholic berry wines. The research has shown that berries contain anthocyanin, which can help to lower our blood sugar, prevent cardiovascular diseases and even reduce our risk of cancer. Celebrating with wine, therefore, looks more upbeat for diabetics, but remember, moderation is still the key.

    Great post! I am not diabetic, but I think berry wine is probably a better option for many of us health-wise as many people are unknowingly pre-diabetic. Berries are definitely something I incorporate daily into my diet for the many health benefits they bring. Happy holidays and cheers to you!

      Thanks Salina. I am trying to have more berries as well. I have a far way to go, mainly because they can be so pricey where I live.     Thanks for this thoughtful post. As you said with Christmas around the corner, controlling diabetes is a challenge for diabetics and their families. My mum was a diabetic and endured years of dialysis treatment, and it was always a constant balancing act to manage her diet, medication and exercise – add heart and respiratory problems to that and you have a whole lot of problems. My mum lost her battle 3 years ago from heart failure. But it’s taught my siblings and I the importance of a good diet and exercise even during the holiday season.

    Interesting post! I am not diabetic, but have close relatives who are. You’re on a great path in adjusting lifestyle and diet to try and reverse it. It sounds like berries would be beneficial to everyone, diabetic and not.
